PROFIT OVER PEOPLE -- Noam Chomsky It should come as no surprise that i am a huge Noam Chomsky fan. In fact, he is one of my 3 heros: Greg LeMond, Dennis Kucinitch, and Noam Chomsky. The common thread is that they all challenge conventional thought and ultimately improve the current state in which they perform. WHile I tend to hold these three individuals in high esteem, they all have their critics. These criticisms generally originate from those where truth can compromise one's personal success. Profit Over People is another example of Chomsky's work that exposes the underbelly of our glorious nation that provides unlimited opportunity that typically comes at the expense of our neighbors. Like all of Chomsky's work, examples are numerous and well cited. NAFTA, WTO, MAI, World Bank, USAID, Colombian drug war, and our founding fathers are all highlights of this book that detail the corporate agenda that has infected our policies. "Freedom without opportunity is a Devil's gift, and the refusal to provide such opportunity is criminal." This one line summarizes the context of the book: nationalistic suppression followed by an onslught of democracy and topped off with unsustainable economic practices. People often ask why I am so enthralled with Chomsky. As Chomsky says, "if you act like there is no possibility of change for the better, you guarantee that there will be no change for the better." His work gives people like me the tools to construct a change for the better. Maybe I am biased, but I have to give this 10 pizza slices out of 10; a whole pie! His rigourous research and citation are welcomed aspects that dispell the critics. Critics say that Noam has an agenda. If an agenda is equality and fairness for all, then perhaps they are right.
